Mount Carmel Overdose Lawsuits
Ohio Hospital Negligence Attorney and Medical Malpractice Lawyer reviews Mount Carmel overdose lawsuits and wrongful death claims for families and plaintiffs
An ongoing investigation into Columbus, Ohio’s Mount Carmel hospital has uncovered reports of at least 34 patients who may have been victims of a doctor’s “excessive” use of fentanyl, Dilaudid and other dangerous painkillers and opioids. The doctor has now been charged with at least 25 overdose deaths.
Dr. William Husel, who worked in Mt. Carmel’s intensive care for years has been accused of medical malpractice and criminal negligence for using a great deal of powerful drugs, which allegedly led directly to the death of numerous patients over a five-year period. At least 15 wrongful death lawsuits have been filed against the doctor and the Mount Carmel hospital administration.
Several of the Mount Carmel overdose lawsuits allege patients in the Columbus hospital received lethal doses of fentanyl ordered by Dr. William Husel. Other opioid drugs were also used on patients, including Dilaudid (hydromorphone).
Families of victims are now suing Husel, Mount Carmel and the medical staff who approved and administered the dangerous drugs that contributed to a premature death. Attorneys expect criminal charges as well as medical negligence charges in the case.
Mount Carmel has apologized and put 23 other employees on leave. Mount Carmel Health Systems says they were unaware of all the patient deaths until October of 2018. They started contacting families after the internal investigation was complete.

Mount Carmel Overdose Lawsuits
Several lawsuits have already been filed on behalf of plaintiffs and families, naming the physician, hospital pharmacists, nurses, and hospital management, claiming they were all negligent and failed to follow basic medical protocol.
Not all patients were suffering from a terminal illness. This is not simply a case of physician compassion or misunderstanding. Medical records show the truth of the hospital negligence, even if Mount Carmel staff were misinformed and failed to provide a normal standard of care. Records show one victim died from 1,000 micrograms of fentanyl, even though his family was told he was given morphine.
The cases vary, though the end was always the same: the patient died from an overdose. One patient received a large dosage of fentanyl along with the sedative midazolam. One patient was given up to 2,000 micrograms of fentanyl in late 2018. Some patients were given multiple doses of painkillers, which experts say was clearly excessive.
