What Raw Dating App Data was Exposed?

The alleged compromised personal data includes users’ display names, dates of birth, dating and sexual preferences and users’ locations. Some of the location data included rather accurate coordinates that concerned those investigating the matter.

Raw claims on its website and in its privacy policy that its app uses end-to-end encryption, a security feature that prevents anyone other than the user from accessing the data, but TechCrunch found no sign that the app uses end-to-end encryption. In fact, the personal data about its users was available to almost anyone. Raw eventually fixed the data exposure after TechCrunch contacted the company. When asked about the app security, company officials confirmed that the company had not performed a third-party security audit.

It is unknown how long the app compromised its users’ personal data. TechCrunch discovered the bug while testing the app with a new user account with dummy data. TechCrunch found that the app was pulling users profile data from the company’s servers, but the server was not protecting the returned data.

Raw has not disclosed how many users it has, but their app listing on the Google Play Store notes more than 500,000 Android downloads.
