Understanding the FreshRealm Listeria Outbreak
FreshRealm establishments in San Clemente, California, Montezuma, Georgia and Indianapolis, Indiana, are recalling chicken fettuccine alfredo products that may be contaminated with a strain of Listeria monocytogenes , the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced last week.
On June 18, 2025, the FDA and CDC issued an alert on the investigations of illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to chicken fettuccine alfredo meals sold by FreshRealm at Kroger and Walmart.
At the time of writing, at least 17 cases have been reported from 13 states. Seven people reported eating precooked meals, and with four specifically reporting that they consumed chicken fettuccine alfredo. Of 17 people with information, 16 were hospitalized and thus far there are three deaths attributed to listeriosis. There is one fetal loss associated illness in an expecting mother.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with a weakened immune system. Even healthy individuals can suffer with high fevers, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
As a result, FreshRealm, Inc., recalled certain pre-made chicken fettuccine alfredo products sold at Kroger and Walmart under the Marketside and Home Chef brand. Below is more detailed packaging information:
