What Happened at California Cryobank?

California Cryobank reported this particular data breach to the California Attorney General’s office on March 14, 2025. The sample letter indicates that on April 21, 2024, the company discovered unauthorized activity on computers within its IT network and started an investigation. It was later determined that an unauthorized party had gained access to the company’s IT systems between April 20, 2024, and April 22, 2024.

A large amount of consumers sensitive personal information was potentially exposed, including the following:

  • Financial account numbers
  • Health insurance information

As one of the largest reproductive tissue banks in the country, there are concerns that biometric data may be compromised in a privacy intrusion. The company specializes in frozen donor sperm and frozen donor egg services, and provides a range of reproductive services including private semen cryopreservation, egg and embryo storage, and cord blood banking.

California Cryobank has labs and branches in Palo Alto, CA; New York, NY; Boston, MA; and Rockville, MD. The company is registered with the FDA and holds accreditations from the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
