Asbestos Exposure Lawyers

Representing former riley stoker employees following Workplace Asbestos Exposure

The Lyon Firm is reviewing new mesothelioma and lung cancer claims on behalf of former workers at Riley Stoker and others in industrial work settings. Our asbestos lawyers have settled numerous occupational cancer cases for individuals and families for six and seven figures.

The Riley Stoker Corporation allegedly used asbestos materials in the production of industrial boilers for many years, placing workers at serious risk of toxic exposure and later causing a myriad of health issues, including related cancers like mesothelioma. Riley, now a subsidiary of Babcock Power, Inc., has been named as a defendant in numerous workplace injury and occupational cancer lawsuits.

Like many industrial outfits operating in the latter half of the 20th century, Riley Stoker utilized asbestos to insulate products, and later sold them to various other companies. Asbestos was thought to be the perfect insulator because it is durable, cheap, and fire resistant. However, it is now known to cause cancer in many workers who handle the material. The CDC has said there is no safe level of asbestos exposure, and many Riley workers handled the material on a daily basis.

More About Riley Stoker

The Riley Stoker Corporation was founded in Worcester, Massachusetts, and primarily manufactured boilers for various industries. The company made large, industrial-scale boilers along with related products and parts. They also manufactured boiler insulation and gaskets.

Riley has been around for well over a century, and the company has changed hands over their long history. Before the health hazards of asbestos exposure were widely known, Riley Stoker was sold to Ashland, a large oil company. In 1990, Ashland sold Riley, but not before facing lawsuits over workplace asbestos exposure, which gained full steam in the 1980s.

Today, Riley Stoker is known as Riley Power and is a subsidiary of Babcock Power, providing services, engineering, equipment, and technology for power generation, steam generators, and heat exchangers.

Despite the hundreds of lawsuits that surfaced from former workers, many of the Riley products that contained asbestos were still in operation until recently. Some of the workers at the highest risk of coming face-to-face with the toxic materials included boilermakers, boiler workers, industrial workers, paper mill workers, oil refinery workers, and power plant staff.

Riley Stoker Asbestos Insulation

Asbestos was not always known as a deadly substance, and therefore was used by almost every industry in America. Asbestos effectively resists heat and fire, and was obviously attractive to any company using high temps. These products were used in industrial facilities, factories, paper mills, oil refineries, power plants, and steel mills.

Riley Stoker did not actually manufacture its boilers with asbestos, but used it to insulate components. Many of Riley Stoker’s boilers contained asbestos in the following parts:

  • Insulation
  • Gaskets
  • Heat exchangers
  • Packing
  • Sealing

Who Was Exposed to Asbestos?

Anyone who handled or worked in the area where asbestos was being manipulated could have been acutely exposed. When inhaled or ingested, asbestos dust is easily lodged in tissue, and can lay dormant for many years before causing asbestosis, mesothelioma, lung cancer and a number of other diseases.

Riley and Babcock employees who assembled the company boilers likely handled some asbestos, and are at a high risk of developing cancer. The following positions were at an increased risk of exposure:

  • Boiler assemblers
  • Boiler operators
  • Maintenance workers
  • Mechanics

Asbestos Related Illness & Cancer

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the CDC, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) all consider asbestos to be a toxin with the ability to cause cancer. It is safe to assume that the longer the exposure to a particular toxin, the greater the risk of developing a related illness. Asbestos exposure at the workplace has been linked to the following:

A number of studies have indicated that exposure to asbestos may cause mesothelioma, adenocarcinoma lung cancer and asbestosis. There can be a very long latency period of 20-50 years after initial exposure and a confirmed cancer diagnosis.

Following a cancer diagnosis, it is critical to seek the best treatment possible and to contact an attorney to discuss ways to get a compensation package in place to help pay for medical costs, lost wages and long-term disability.

Why Should I File a Lawsuit?

Workers who were continually exposed to chemicals and toxins at the workplace without their knowledge may have a valid legal claim to compensation. If an employer was negligent in failing to warn employees of certain risks, failed to educate staff on work safety standards, and failed to provide and maintain proper safety equipment, they may be held accountable for injuries sustained on the job.

Individuals and families may go through some very hard times following a documented cancer diagnosis, and will require assistance to help pay for living costs, medical expenses and long-term treatments.

Our Firm can help you identify any workplace toxic exposure sources and then initiate the proper claims to provide the security you and your family deserve.
