Philip Carey Manufacturing Corp. was a storied manufacturer of asbestos roofing and siding as well as insulation products for industrial equipment. Their products were installed on boilers, pipes, generators and other heavy machinery. The company actually mined asbestos and then produced asbestos-containing products for various third parties. Philip Carey was originally established in Ohio, but grew quite large and eventually merged with Rapid American Corporation.

Because Philip Carey used asbestos in their products, their workers were very likely exposed on a regular basis. Thus, Carey and Rapid American have been targeted in several toxic exposure lawsuits over the years, with claims that their products caused irreparable harm.

The legal pressure began shortly after Rapid-American merged with Philip Carey in 1974. The company eventually was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2013 because it was facing thousands of asbestos claims. Rapid-American settled many of those injury claims and paid out tens of millions of dollars.

The lawsuits claimed Philip Carey used asbestos to manufacture boilers, pipes, insulation and generators. Below are some examples of the asbestos products manufactured by Philip Carey Manufacturing:

  • Carey-Canadian Asbestos 7RF Floats
  • Carey Thermo-Board concrete
  • Carey Rock Wool
  • Asbestos Magnesia Diatomite Rock Wool
  • Carey Stone
  • Fire-Chex Shingles

Anyone who worked with equipment or asbestos products manufactured by the company before the 1970s may be at risk of developing an asbestos-related disease. Engineers, metal workers, and factory staff, machinists and other workers at the plants were at risk for exposure to these products.

Philip Carey Asbestos FAQ

How Does Asbestos Exposure Lead to Cancer?

Asbestos fibers naturally break down over time and the fibers can turn into a fine dust that may be airborne, easily ingested or inhaled by any workers in the vicinity. Over time, those toxic fibers will create inflammation and individuals will eventually start to show signs and symptoms of a related illness. Many former workers have been diagnosed with asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma up to 50 years after initial exposure to asbestos due to a long latency period.

What Philip Carey Products Contained Asbestos?

Old catalogs of Philip Carey products display Careystone Asbestos Cement Shingles; Careystone Asbestos-Cement Siding (Careystone Weatherboard), notably with claims they are “made of Asbestos and Portland Cement.”

Careyclad Black Metal Coating: “In the manufacture of Careyclad, exceptionally high quality asphalt and asbestos fibre from Carey’s own Canadian mines are used.”

Careystone Asbestos-Cement Wallboard: “Careystone Asbestos-Cement Wallboard will not burn.  It is made of two of the most fire-resistant, time-defying substances-asbestos fibres and Portland cement.  The asbestos fibres are uniformly distributed through cement and the mixture is then combined permanently under great pressure.”

Carey R. D. Board: “This is a tough, laminated board of good rigidity fabricated of asphalt saturated felts combined with a stiff, asphaltic adhesive. Both sides are sealed with white, moisture repellent, asbestos felts.”

Carey Duct, Pipe and Boiler Coverings “CAREYDUCT is a standardized factory-built duct for conveying conditioned air (either hot or cold).  Made entirely of asbestos, it is insulation as well as duct.”

Careycel Board; Careycel (For Low Pressure Steam and Hot Water (100 F to 300 F): “Careycel Pipe Coverings and Blocks are designed especially to insulate pipes, boilers, insulated metal boiler jackets, ovens and other apparatus carrying temperatures of not over 300 F. Careycel is made of sheet asbestos.”

Asbestos products manufactured by Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation could include the following:

  • Carey-Canadian Asbestos 7RF Floats

  • Carey Rock Wool
  • Asbestos Magnesia Diatomite Rock Wool
  • Carey Stone
