What happened at Urban One?
Urban One, an African American-focused media conglomerate, has disclosed to several state agencies that its employees’ personal data and other corporate information may have been leaked. The company described the related cyberattack as a “sophisticated social engineering campaign” that occurred in February 2025. The data security incident was claimed by the Cactus ransomware operation in March.
Cactus ransomware’s attack against Urban One is just one of many for the group. They have claimed attacks on Americold, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, leading Swedish supermarket chain Coop, and Schneider Electric.
The hacking of Urban One’s network allegedly led to the compromise of individuals’ names, addresses, Social Security numbers, W-2 details, and direct deposit information. The company has sent out data breach notification letters to individuals as well as to Massachusetts and Texas officials explaining some about the incident but some details are still unknown.
According to the notice, starting on February 13, 2025, an unauthorized third party gained access to Urban One’s network through a social engineering campaign. On March 15, 2025, Urban One launched an investigation to determine the scope and nature of the event. They later confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems belonging to its employees could have been viewed and acquired by the unauthorized third party.
