What Happened at SimonMed Imaging?

A SimonMed representative has said a security breach occurred within the company’s network last week, but says the hackers attempts at encrypting data were thwarted.

The company has hired cybersecurity experts from Palo Alto Networks’ Unit42 to investigate the matter and to ensure their systems are secure. Ransomware group Medusa has apparently claimed responsibility for the cyberattack, and posted what they said was proof of stolen data.  he hacker group claims it holds over 212 GB of data from SimonMed and was holding it ransom for $1 million in Bitcoin.

The ransomware group claims it stole Social Security numbers, medical records, corporate emails and diagnostic images. The radiology practice had not posted anything regarding the incident on its website at the time of writing.

The cyberattack is one of several similar events suffered by radiology practices and other healthcare groups over the last year. Pinehurst Radiology Associates, University Diagnostic Medical Imaging, East River Medical Imaging and others have been targeted.
