What Happened at Reading Cooperative Bank?
In February 2025, Reading Cooperative Bank began sending out notice regarding a data breach that has affected 20,532 individuals in Massachusetts alone. The reported breach was the result of an email phishing incident that made it possible for a hacker to gain access to sensitive consumer information.
Information potentially compromised includes the following:
- Social Security numbers
- Medical records
- Financial account information
- Driver’s license numbers
- Credit and debit card numbers
On the Reading Bank website, the company notes the following: “If your information may have been impacted, under Massachusetts law, you have the right to obtain any police report filed in regard to this security incident. If you are the victim of identity theft, you also have the right to file a police report and obtain a copy of it. Massachusetts law also allows consumers to place a security freeze on their credit reports. A security freeze prohibits a credit reporting agency from releasing any information from a consumer’s credit report without written authorization. However, please be aware that placing a security freeze on your credit report may delay, interfere with, or prevent the timely approval of any requests you make for new loans, credit mortgages, employment, housing, or other services. Under federal law, you cannot be charged to place or lift a credit freeze from a credit report.”
Reading Cooperative Bank says they have implemented additional cybersecurity safeguards, and are now working with external experts to “further enhance the security of our systems.” RCB has begun notifying individuals whose data may have been impacted by mailing notification letters.
