What Happened at Pacific Rehabilitation Centers?
In late December 2024, a Pacific Rehabilitation Centers employee received a ransomware notice on their computer. The company’s IT staff immediately took their servers offline, though the damage may have already been done as they confirmed that data on the servers was encrypted. An investigation is still ongoing, and it is unclear if any of the personal data at risk was exported.
According to a notice posted on the Pacific website, the company notes that the following personal information and records of patients, employees, and individual contractors may have been encrypted and remain inaccessible: names, addresses, diagnosis and treatment information, social security numbers, health plan numbers, banking information for direct deposit, dates of birth, email addresses, driver’s license numbers, citizenship status, passport numbers, dependent personal information, and electronic signatures.
The Washington-based company is expected to begin sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals impacted when they determine the scope of the incident. It is important to understand the risks of fraud and medical identity theft following such data security events. It is prudent to take certain measures to protect yourself and to contact an experienced attorney if you have been notified by any company breached in a cyberattack.
