What happened at MC Pathology?
This incident was first reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) by Marlboro-Chesterfield Pathology on May 9, 2025. A sample data breach notification letter posted on their website notes that on January 16, 2025, MC Pathology experienced a data breach involving “unauthorized access to its internal IT systems.”
A later investigation concluded that the SAFEPAY ransomware group gained access to and exfiltrated approximately 30 GB of sensitive data. The SAFEPAY ransomware group claimed responsibility for the attack on a dark web post on January 25, 2025.
This breach may impact over 235,000 individuals across the country. The compromised information may include a combination of personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI), including the following: name, address, date of birth (PII), as well as medical treatment information and health insurance details such as policy numbers (PHI).
