What to know about the Jeep Cherokee ABS Recall?
Chrysler has issued a recall for 206,502 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles. The company has noted several road safety risks due to Jeep ABS (antilock-brake system) malfunction. The ABS module may allegedly incorrectly illuminate the brake lights and disable the ABS and electronic stability control (ESC), which can dramatically reduce vehicle handling and control in some driving situations.
The Jeep ABS and traction/stability control may be inadvertently disabled due to a faulty Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). When ABS is disabled in a vehicle, driving in perilous weather can pose more of a risk. Malfunctioning braking signals can also be quite hazardous for all motorists in the vicinity. Some vehicles may also accidentally shift into gear posing a rollaway vehicle risk.
NHTSA reports indicate at least one accident is possibly linked to the alleged ABS safety issue. A consumer reported that they crashed their 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo due to their ABS brakes failing and locking up. The steering wheel also apparently locked up without warning, resulting in an accident. Vehicle operators may also be able to start and shift out of Park without the brake pedal being applied, posing a dangerous rollaway risk.
Interim owner letters were mailed December 5, 2024, but Chrysler offered no available repair for the following models:
- 2018-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee
- 2018-2019 Dodge Durango
What to know about the Dodge Ram Recall?
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) has recalled 2017–2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, as well as Ram 3500, 4500, and 5500 Cab Chassis trucks due to the risk of an antilock brake (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and traction control system failure. The company has noted that a failing HCU will initially result in the intermittent loss of ABS/traction control progressing to permanent loss. The Ram truck recall involves a total of 317,630 trucks.
Chrysler has indicated that the safety issue at hand is due to a potentially faulty hydraulic control unit (HCU), which may be susceptible to malfunction, resulting in a reduction or other change in performance for the vehicle’s safety systems. Some NHTSA complaints suggest trucks may lose 4WD ability and trailer brake lights may malfunction.
Intermittent ABS and traction problems may be symptomatic of a malfunctioning HCU and can lead to permanent failure. A warning light should illuminate on the instrument panel when the antilock system is inoperative.
The NHTSA has said a formal investigation was opened as early as November 28, 2022, after it was discovered that some 2017-2018 Dodge Ram 2500-3500 vehicles built with a hydraulic control unit (HCU) anti-lock brake system (ABS) could make it difficult to operate the brakes or even fail completely. Such a serious impact on the Ram ABS braking or stability control systems can pose added risks of collision and injury.
Recall notification letters should have been mailed to all owners of recalled Dodge Ram models in early January 2025. The Ram ABS recall notice indicates full replacement of the HCU is the solution. The following Dodge Ram trucks were recalled:
- 2017–2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks
- 2017–2018 3500, 4500, and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles.
