What Happened at CASTO?

CASTO recently reported an alleged data breach to the Attorney General of New Hampshire, explaining that sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been unlawfully accessed and acquired. According to the official breach notice, in December 2023 — almost one year ago — CASTO became aware of suspicious activity within its IT network. As a response, CASTO launched an investigation, but it is unclear why it has taken almost 12 months to send out notifications to potential victims.

The company concluded that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between December 8 and December 9, 2023. Not until August 22, 2024, did the company complete a full review. The specific type of personal information potentially exposed could vary among those impacted, but may include the following types of information:

• Name
• Social Security number
• Driver’s license or other government identification number
• Account number, credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account

On November 27, 2024, CASTO finally began mailing data breach notification letters to individuals with potentially compromised personal data. CASTO is a privately held real estate services firm, offering a range of commercial real estate services, including asset management, commercial acquisitions and dispositions, commercial development, leasing, maintenance, and property management, and financial services. The company also provides residential real estate services such as residential development and property management, buying and selling homes, and tenet coordination.
