Amcast produced aluminum wheels as well as aluminum castings for automobile suspension and brake systems. Amcast Industrial workers in Dayton and Ironton, Ohio were at risk of serious health issues as a result of asbestos exposure their respective work sites. Many workers at Amcast Industrial and a long list of other auto part companies in Ohio faced occupational toxic exposure. Auto casting production sites were built with asbestos bricks, drywall, and had a large amount of insulation on boilers and piping.
Asbestos dust was likely sent airborne at some point at these facilities and could have been lodged in the lung tissues, later developing into asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
Many aluminum casting workers, including those in an Amcast plant could still at risk of developing serious health issues, including occupational cancer.
Amcast Industrial Asbestos
Auto parts were commonly manufactured with asbestos because the material has natural heat-resistant properties. However, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has said that almost any kind of exposure could lead to a fatal illness.
Some auto parts contained more toxic material than others. These auto parts can pose a threat :
