INVESTIGATING Volkswagen Audi Data Breach Claims
Volkswagen Audi announced recently that the company suffered a data breach that may impact more than 3 million North American customers and prospective buyers. The majority of the victims were likely current or potential customers of Audi, one of Volkswagen’s luxury brands.
Volkswagen confirmed that an unauthorized third party obtained certain personal information about Audi Volkswagen customers and interested buyers from a vendor between 2014 and 2019. This data, it appears, has been out in the open for several years in some cases, placing individuals at risk of identity theft and fraud.
Audi Volkswagen says the personal information, which includes phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers and account numbers, was originally compiled for sales and marketing and the vendor left the data unsecured. The sensitive personal data included driver license numbers in more than 95 percent of cases, and only a small number of records included other data.
More than 3.1 million individuals with links to Volkswagen Audi automobiles could be affected in the United States. The company did not acknowledge the security breach incident until May 2021.
The Lyon Firm is investigating Volkswagen Audi data breach claims for plaintiffs, and is reviewing other data privacy litigation for Americans nationwide.
