Is Wild Coast Raw Cat Food Contaminated With Bird Flu?

Wild Coast LLC dba Wild Coast Raw has begun recalling frozen Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula raw cat food due to potential contamination with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1. This strain of bird flu may be transmitted to animals eating a contaminated product.

Human infections are also rare but possible when handling contaminated products if the virus makes contact with a person’s eyes, nose, or mouth. Individuals who have handled these products should sanitize all surfaces that may have been touched by this product.

The recall was initiated on March 1, 2025, after the Oregon Department of Agriculture discovered the presence of a strain of H5N1 in the cat food products. Safety agencies were alerted to at least two instances of house cats in Washington State becoming infected with bird flu. Both pet owners reported feeding their cats potentially contaminated Wild Coast Raw pet food. One of the cats was euthanized. Five cat deaths in Oregon have now been recorded.

Which Wild Coast Cat Food was Recalled?

According to an FDA announcement and a notice on the company’s website, 16oz and 24oz frozen Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula raw pet food for cats in Washington State and Oregon is being recalled. The product is sold frozen in small round white plastic containers with green labeling. The affected lots are identified by a sticker containing the following lot numbers: #22660, #22653, #22641, #22639, #22672 and #22664. The lot codes #22660 and #22664 were already previously included in a February WSDA public health alert.

How is Cat Food Linked to Bird Flu?

Due to multiple reports of cat food contaminated with bird flu, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requiring pet food manufacturers.  The FDA is recommending the following practices to minimize H5N1 risks:

  • Source ingredients only from healthy herds or flocks.
  • Implement processing steps such as heat treatment, which has been shown to inactivate the virus in meat, milk and eggs.
  • Establish supply-chain controls to verify ingredients are free of H5N1 contamination.

If your cat has consumed the recalled product, be aware of some common symptoms of bird flu. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, these symptoms may include:

  • Fever
  • Lethargy
  • Low appetite
  • Reddened or inflamed eyes
  • Discharge from the eyes and nose
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Neurological signs like tremors, stiff body movements, seizure, lack of coordination or blindness

Cat owners should be aware that in addition to the Wild Coast Raw cat food recall, Blue Ridge Beef and Northwest Naturals’ Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food have also been recalled.
