What Happened at Vanderbilt University Medical Center?

In late November 2023, the Vanderbilt hospital system was added to the leak site of the Meow ransomware gang. A spokesperson for VUMC confirmed that they were dealing with a cyber incident. “Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) identified and contained a cybersecurity incident in which a database was compromised and has launched an investigation into the incident.” The spokesperson did not confirm when it occurred or if any data may have been compromised.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) operates seven hospitals and multiple healthcare facilities across Nashville, Tennessee. The system serves more than three million patients each year, and is one of the largest employers in the state with 40,000 employees. The system has more than 17,000 beds across its hospitals.

Cyberattacks targeting hospitals are on the rise, and have been a major security issue for the last few years. Even though healthcare entities are well aware of the risks, the hospital network security can’t always seem to thwart these kinds of attacks. Medical identity theft can be devastating to individuals, and can easily happen when a data theft event leaks even a small amount of personal data.

Our data breach lawyers represent plaintiffs nationwide when IT security negligence results in the theft of sensitive personal data. We seek compensation on behalf of victims and aim to hold negligent parties accountable for their actions. Contact our attorneys to discuss possible legal action.
