What Happened at Tyler Technologies?

In April 2024, the LockBit ransomware gang leaked 1 GB of data allegedly stolen from the District of Columbia’s Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB). The same group said they possessed 800 GB of data pertaining to DISB, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as well as other banking institutions and financial entities.

That stolen data appears to have originated during a cyberattack on Tyler Technologies, a software and services provider for the public sector. Cybersecurity experts say Tyler Technologies suffered an attack by the RansomExx ransomware group, a rebranded version of the Defray777 ransomware group.

On April 19th, Tyler confirmed that information allegedly stolen from their network was leaked online. Tyler has admitted that potentially compromised information may include names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and other information.

The attack, Tyler has pointed out, is unrelated to a 2020 ransomware attack that impacted its internal corporate network and phone systems and impacted various systems. Operating out of Texas, Tyler Technologies provides property tax lifecycle management solutions, civic services solutions, a secure system for accessing official records, regulatory solutions, integrated corrections, case management, and public safety solutions.

At least one lawsuit has already been filed against Tyler Technologies, claiming the company failed to properly secure and safeguard the personally identifiable information (PII) of thousands of individuals. Plaintiffs claim the defendant is responsible for a security breach in which thousands of individuals suffered material and immaterial losses that included first, an invasion of privacy. There is a certain theft of data, lost time, and perhaps most concerning, the continued and certainly increased risk of fraud and identity theft.
