Sharp HealthCare Data Breach Investigation

UPDATE: Our data breach lawyers are reviewing new claims of data theft following a reported IT security incident at EpiSource and Sharp HealthCare. Sharp reported to the Attorney General of California that a third party vendor, Episource, had experienced a data breach in which a large amount of sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information may have been compromised.

What Happened at Sharp HealthCare?

According to a sample breach notice sent out, on February 6, 2025, Episource discovered unusual IT activity and started an investigation into the matter. They later confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems belonging to Sharp HealthCare patients may have been accessed and acquired between January 27, 2025, and February 6, 2025.  The type of information potentially exposed includes the following:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Phone number and email address
  • Driver’s license or state ID number
  • Health data (medical record numbers, diagnoses, test results, images, and treatment information)
  • Health insurance information

Past Sharp Security Breach Reported in 2023

Sharp HealthCare, San Diego’s largest health provider, has begun notifying over 62,000 patients that personal information may have been compromised during a hacking attack.

On January 12, 2023, Sharp identified suspicious activity on a server that runs the Sharp.com website. An unauthorized person gained access to a file containing patients’ information. Patient names, Sharp identification numbers, invoice numbers, payment amounts, and the names of the Sharp facilities receiving the payments may have been leaked.
