What Happened at Select Medical?

Select Medical recently reported a data breach incident to the Attorney General of Vermont, signifying that the sensitive personal identifiable information in its possession may have been compromised.

According to the breach notice sent out, on July 11, 2024, a third-party vendor called Nationwide Recovery Service discovered suspicious activity related to certain computer systems. NRS launched an investigation and concluded that sensitive personal information in its systems belonging to certain Select Medical patients may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between July 5 and July 11, 2024.

On April 9, 2025, NRS allegedly provided Select Medical with a list of patients whose information may have been impacted but not until June 6, 2025, did Select Medical start notifying these individuals. It is unclear why there was a two-month delay in sharing this important information. The typed of compromised data may include the following:

• Name
• Social Security number
• Addresses
• Date of birth
• Patient account numbers
• Provider names
