GLOBE LIFE DATA BREACH UPDATE:

Globe has now begun notifying as many as 850,000 individuals of an apparent data breach that might have involved a wide range of personal, health, and insurance information.

Following the 2024 ransomware attack, the threat actor attempted to extort the company, demanding a ransom payment to not publish the compromised data.

The insurer initially said only around 5,000 people might have been affected, and that no credit card data, banking information, and other financial information was compromised. However, the company has now decided more prudent to notify 850,000 additional individuals of the data security incident, noting in an SEC filing that the company “has not been able to confirm if the threat actor acquired these additional individuals’ data”.

The threat actor may have been able to access a wide spread of sensitive information including:

  • Full names
  • Email addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • Postal Addresses
  • Dates of Birth
  • Social Security Numbers
  • Health data
  • Insurance policy information

What Happened at Globe?

In mid 2024, Globe Life said it started an initial investigation into “potential vulnerabilities related to access permissions and user identity management for a Company web portal.” Such “vulnerabilities” may have granted unauthorized access to consumer and policyholder information. It is not clear at the moment exactly what type of data may have been compromised.

The insurance company noted that it hired outside cybersecurity experts to help with the investigation. We do not know if Globe Life was targeted in a ransomware attack, though such data security incidents are not uncommon and many insurance companies have been targeted by hackers in recent years.

On June 14, 2024, Globe Life filed a notice with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) after apparently experiencing a cybersecurity incident. An investigation is ongoing, and if data was in fact leaked, the company will begin to send out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was impacted.
