What Happened in the Congressional Staffer Data Breach?
The personal information of congressional staffers was leaked after a cyberattack targeted the Capitol, according to reports. A Swiss internet security firm called Proton found over 1,800 passwords used by staffers in Congress available on the dark web, according to The Washington Times.
Proton is working alongside the U.S.-based firm Constella Intelligence in the investigation, and concluded that almost 20 percent of congressional staffers had personal information available on the dark web.
Proton told the Washington Times, “Many of these leaks likely occurred because staffers used their official email addresses to sign up for various services, including high-risk sites such as dating and adult websites, which were later compromised in data breaches.”
The report said that about 3,191 congressional staffers were impacted by the data theft incident. The potential consequences of compromised accounts could be severe, and all victims are encouraged to take certain measures to mitigate risks.
We should know more soon and specific details should emerge over the coming weeks. The company has contacted all the affected congressional staffers and informed them of the data leaks.
