On February 5, 2023, Blue Shield was informed by Brightline Medical Associates that a subcontractor, Fortra, suffered a cyber security incident. An investigation revealed that an unauthorized individual gained access to Fortra’s GoAnywhere Managed File Transfer-as-a-service (MFTaaS) application and was able to download files that Brightline maintained on that system.

More than 27,000 individuals may have had their personal data compromised. 

What is Brightline?

Brightline, headquartered in San Mateo, California, is a behavioral and mental healthcare provider, specializing in mental health care for children and teenagers. It is a provider for health insurers that provide employer health plans, including Aetna, Cigna, Cardinal at Work, California’s Valued Trust MCSIG, RadNet, Sequoia, and Xcel Energy.

Blue Shield of California, out of Oakland, California, is a nonprofit health plan. Blue Shield has over 4.5 million subscribers with a network of over 65,000 physicians and 7,500 employees.
