What Happened at AVALA?

On May 30, 2025, AVALA allegedly detected an intrusion into its IT network and enlisted third-party cybersecurity specialists to investigate and address the suspected breach.

The investigation finalized around July 23, 2025, concluded that the breach compromised certain patients’ personal details. Depending on the individual, compromised information may include the following: names, addresses, dates of birth, medical treatment records, health insurance details, and Social Security numbers.

Here are a few practical steps you can take to guard against medical identity theft following a data theft incident:

  • Keep your health insurance card private: Share it only with healthcare providers or loved ones involved in your care.
  • Check your explanation of benefits (EOB) statements: These arrive from your insurer—review these for unfamiliar charges and follow up with your insurance company or provider if something looks unusual.
  • Request a year-to-date report from your insurer: This lists all services billed under your name. Contact your insurance company or provider to investigate anything you don’t recognize.
  • By staying proactive, you can help protect your personal and medical information in the future by choosing who to share it with.
