What Causes Data Breaches?
The Atlas Healthcare data breach was only recently announced, and most details are unknown at the moment. As the investigation unfolds, we will learn more about the specifics. However, most data breach incidents involving healthcare systems occur in the same manner, and for the same reasons. Medical data and other personal data can be sold on the dark web, and cybercriminals see these entities as easy targets. As a result, there are data theft incidents almost daily involving hospitals, clinics, rehab centers, nursing homes and third-party vendors that handle data.
We do know that an unauthorized party allegedly gained access to the Atlas IT network on January 20, 2023. Officials investigated the event and confirmed that the unauthorized party was able to access files containing confidential information linked to Manchester Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Arbors of Hop Brook, and Vernon Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Atlas reviewed all compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which will vary depending on the individual in question.
