Mesothelioma & Asbestos Cancer Lawsuits

Compensation for toxic exposure and occupational cancers

Thousands of American employees in a wide range of heavy industries were chronically exposed to asbestos and other toxic materials at their respective workplaces. As a result, many have later fallen ill, diagnosed with related lung diseases and lung cancers. Taking legal action may be the best course of action for families to ensure a stable financial future.

Kentile Floors went out of business years ago, but only after they manufactured a huge amount of toxic flooring products. Over the last three decades, the company has faced hundreds of lawsuits after former workers confirmed a cancer diagnosis, directly linked to asbestos exposure.

Kentile Floors manufactured asphalt and vinyl flooring containing asbestos until around 1986. Not only were company employees at risk, but so were others who handled after-market products. Workers in the following trades regularly worked with Kentile flooring:

  • Asbestos abatement professionals
  • Commercial/residential builders
  • Construction and demolition workers
  • Floor tile and linoleum layers
  • Remodelers
  • Tile workers

Kentile offered flooring in a range of materials, colors, and patterns, much of which could be installed by homeowners, bypassing the added expense of professional installation. Kentile’s residential line was marketed under the Kentile brand name and their asphalt tiles were often advertised as styrene-reinforced tiles.

Kentile Floors marketed its commercial asbestos tiles under the following brands:

  • KenFlex floor tiles
  • Kenlite asphalt vinyl tiles
  • Kencork cork floor tiles
  • Kenrubber rubber floor tiles

Kentile Asbestos Lawsuits

Some estimates state that Kentile flooring products contained 25 percent asbestos. The company continued to use asbestos in some of its products until 1986. As people started connecting serious illnesses to Kentile’s asbestos tiles, the company faced a large number of asbestos and mesothelioma lawsuits. In 1992, Kentile filed for bankruptcy. Metex Manufacturing Corporation then assumed liability for their asbestos claims and Metex also filed for bankruptcy and opened an asbestos trust, funded with over $190 million.

Kentile was hit with thousands of lawsuits due to asbestos exposure and resulting illnesses. The Metex Asbestos Personal Injury Trust continues to compensate claimants. As of 2023, the payment percentage for the trust is 7.25%.

Cancers Linked to Asbestos Exposure

Mesothelioma has definitively linked to chronic asbestos exposure in medical literature and has a long latency period of up to 50 years after initial exposure. Most exposure occurred before the 1980s, however, despite years of action by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), toxic materials still exist in many workplaces.

Asbestos Flooring Risk to Homeowners

Asbestos can be present in many old building installations, including in flooring, roofing, siding, insulation and soundproofing. Vinyl flooring was once very popular and a good deal of it was made with asbestos. For the most part, asbestos can remain hidden and safe, but during renovation or basic remodeling, asbestos materials can fill the air and pose a serious safety risk.

Kentile Floors Asbestos FAQ

Can I File a Toxic Exposure Cancer Lawsuit?

If you were exposed to any carcinogenic material at the workplace and later developed a related cancer or illness, you may have a good claim. Contact our lawyers to help draw a clear connection between your medical condition and past exposure.

Why Did Kentile Use Asbestos?

Asbestos was quite abundant, cheap, durable, fire-resistant and was a great insulator. Before it was known to cause cancer, it was thought to be the perfect material for many applications.

How can I Identify Asbestos in my Home?

To the untrained eye, it may be impossible to identify an asbestos product unless labeling indicates a known asbestos name brand. Even taking normal precautions, a visual inspection of a building structure is not sufficient and abatement professionals should contacted and samples of suspected asbestos fibers should be sent to a laboratory for confirmation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) outlines how to collect material samples that may contain asbestos, but the American Lung Association recommends hiring a certified asbestos professional.

There may be dangerous asbestos materials in any older building in the U.S. built before 1980. If notice the following when identifying Kentile products, it may be prudent to contact a professional to help assess the risk and need of abatement.

KenFlex floor tiles, Kenlite asphalt vinyl tiles, Kencork cork floor tiles, Kenrubber rubber floor tiles containing asbestos were used until the 1980s. Often hidden beneath other flooring, asbestos tiles were commonly used prior to more decorative finishes.
