American First Finance Data Breach Investigation

In May 2024, American First Finance (AFF), a Texas-based consumer credit company, experienced a significant data breach involving approximately 689,000 individuals. The breach was the result of unauthorized access by a former employee of FinWise Bank, a Utah-based banking partner that originates and funds loans for AFF. The incident was discovered on June 18, 2025, over a year after the breach occurred. Affected individuals were notified on July 29, 2025.

What Happened at FinWise & American First?

The breach occurred between May 31, 2024, and June 3, 2024, when a former FinWise Bank employee accessed sensitive customer data after their employment had ended. The compromised data included personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and financial account details. The breach was not discovered until June 18, 2025, and was subsequently reported to the Maine Attorney General’s Office.

The exposure of sensitive personal and financial information poses significant risks to affected individuals, including identity theft, financial fraud, and emotional distress. The delay in discovering and reporting the breach has raised concerns about the effectiveness of AFF’s data security practices and their ability to protect customer information.
