What happened at East River Medical Imaging?

On November 22, 2023, the company started sending data breach notification letters to patients and employees that may have been impacted by an attack on the company’s servers. East River Medical says that on September 20, 2023, they identified suspicious activity on their IT network. An investigation concluded that an unauthorized party accessed the network between August 31, 2023, and September 20, 2023, and may have accessed some documents on the system.

The stolen files involved allegedly contained information that varies from person to person, though could include name, contact information, insurance information, exam and/or procedure information, referring physician, and/or imaging results, and/or Social Security number. For employees, the information reflected names, contact information, financial account information, Social Security number, and/or driver’s license number.

Following any data breach incident, victims should remain vigilant and look for signs of fraud and identity theft. With just a small amount of personal data, criminals can engage in various nefarious schemes. Medical identity theft is on the rise, and many ransomware groups have targeted healthcare organizations like East River Medical.
