Ignition Defect Linked to Kia and Hyundai Theft
The Lyon Firm is investigating Kia and Hyundai Theft Cases linked to an alleged ignition defect. Call now to join the class action.
Hyundai and Kia cars have recently become attractive targets for thieves as it’s come to light that 2011-2021 Kias and some 2015-2021 Hyundais have an ignition defect that may allow car thieves to start the vehicles without the proper keys.
Reports suggest that all you need is a USB cord to start one of these vehicles. An Ohio police department reported that 9 of 16 stolen vehicles investigated from the period May-August 1, 2022 were Hyundai and Kia models. A Florida police department reported 23 of 56 vehicles stolen between July 11-July 27, 2022, were of Kia and Hyundai makes.
What’s Behind the Hyundai-Kia Ignition Defect?
A lawsuit has been filed and according to the complaint, a number of 2011-2021 Hyundai and Kia vehicles were manufactured without engine immobilizers, an important electronic security device that makes this variety of car theft more difficult.
The lawsuit states that an individual merely needs to strip the ignition column of the Kia of Hyundai models and insert a USB drive, knife or other tool to start the vehicle.
Lawyers allege Hyundai and Kia knew that their 2011-2021 models had this ignition defect but chose not to disclose the problem to drivers. There is a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard which mandates that vehicles are equipped with a starting system that prevents the activation of the engine when the car key is removed. The law works to decrease the likelihood that a vehicle will be stolen or accidentally set in motion.
Can I Join the Ignition Defect Class Action Lawsuit?
The car theft class action looks to cover consumers who purchased any 2011-2021 Hyundai or Kia vehicle in the last five years, or any consumer who owns any of the affected vehicles.
Plaintiffs seek reimbursement for the defects and to cover the cost of purchasing the “club” steering wheel lock or another theft-prevention device.
If you or anyone you know owns a 2011-2021 Kia or 2015-2021 Hyundai, or if you had your Kia or Hyundai stolen, the Lyon Firm would be interested in discussing the matter with you.
