Otis Elevator Recall & Elevator Injury Lawsuits

Personal Injury & Product Liability Attorney investigating the Otis Elevator Recall and home private residence elevator accidents and entrapment hazards.

About 5,000 Otis and CemcoLift Private Residence Elevators have been recalled due to a consumer entrapment hazard. The company’s recall statement states that children can become entrapped in the space between the exterior door and the interior elevator gate. Accidents can result in serious injuries or death when the elevator moves from floor to floor.

The Otis Elevator Recall urges consumers with certain models of private residence elevators to seek repairs and block children’s access to any Otis or CemcoLift private residence elevator. The company will add a space guard for no cost.

Otis Elevator Accident Claims

The Otis elevator recall involves Otis elevators purchased before 2012 and CemcoLift private residence elevators purchased from 1999 to 2012. Otis is aware of at least four incidents involving a CemcoLift or Otis elevator that resulted in a crushed spine, fractured hip, broken arm, and other catastrophic injury.

Otis elevators for private homes were sold to independent third-party contractors and directly to consumers through 2012, with a cost of approximately $20,000 to purchase and install. The Otis Elevator Recall was initiated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which is charged with protecting consumers from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use defective elevators and other dangerous consumer products.

Defective elevators and escalators kill about 30 people and seriously injure thousands of people each year in the United States. Elevators cause almost 90 percent of the deaths and 60 percent of serious injuries to consumers. Most incidents involve installing, repairing, or maintaining elevators, though defective home elevators have to potential to malfunction and injure adults and children in their private residences. Entrapment and crush injuries are likely to occur when a defective elevator malfunctions.
