What Happened at Sonrisas Dental Health?
According to the official notice sent to potentially impacted individuals, in early March 2025, Sonrisas Dental discovered unusual activity on its network and contacted independent cybersecurity specialists. An investigation concluded that an unauthorized actor had potentially acquired certain files and data.
Since the incident was discovered, the BianLian group claimed responsibility for the ransomware attack and posted about the breach on the Tor network. According to the company disclosure, around 15,644 individuals in the United States were impacted by this breach.
The compromised information may include personally identifiable information (PII) such as name, driver’s license number, Social Security number, and date of birth. Certain protected health information (PHI) may also be leaked. The BianLian group posted on the dark web claiming to have obtained financial records, HR information, patients’ PII and PHI, private data of partners, vendors, and providers, as well as internal and external email correspondence and database exports. These claims have not been verified, however.
Sonrisas is a nonprofit healthcare organization based in California and provides pediatric dentistry, adult dentistry, geriatric dentistry, sedation dentistry, oral health outreach, and special needs dentistry. The company is headquartered in and operate a clinic in San Mateo, California, with an additional location in Half Moon Bay, California.
