Why Were 1.5 Million Ram Pickup Trucks Recalled?

Stellantis announced in a statement that the recalled Ram pickup trucks may have anti-lock brake software that could inadvertently shut down the stability control system, which in turn could directly impact control of the throttle and brakes.

If the problem is present in a vehicle, owners may see the ABS, ESC, Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward Collision Warning lights lit up when starting the truck. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, issued the Ram 1500 pickup truck recall because disabling the electronic stability control system can increase the risk of a crash.

The company noted that in the event of the stability control failure, the brakes would still work. However, there may still be a significant road safety risk, and American safety standards require electronic stability control to work properly while operating a vehicle. Ram dealers will update software to fix the problem at no cost to owners, but consumers may not be notified by letter until October 2024. If you do not know whether the recall applies to your Ram pickup truck, you can enter your information into the NHTSA recall search tool to clarify.
