Progressive Casualty Insurance Data Breach Investigation

According to reports, over 347,000 individuals may have had their personal data impacted by a data breach at Progressive. The company has said names, birth dates, drivers’ license numbers, phone numbers, addresses and emails may have been leaked.
What Happened?
To cope with a large volume of customer calls, Progressive uses third-party call centers. On May 19, 2023, the company received written notification from a third-party service provider regarding a security incident involving some of its call center reps. They determined that some of the third-party service provider’s employees improperly shared their Progressive access credentials with unauthorized individuals who performed the employees’ call center job duties, giving the unauthorized individuals access to certain personal information.
They launched an investigation and analysis to determine what customer information was accessed and notified law enforcement. Once the call center became aware of the issue, the company and Progressive both took steps to block the unauthorized access. However, the damage may have already been done, and the data is assumed compromised.
As a precaution and to help protect your identity, Progressive is offering the services of Experian to provide credit and identity monitoring.
