Ford Recalls 1.7 Million Vehicles for Rearview Camera Failure

If you own a Ford Bronco, Ford Edge, Ford Explorer, Ford Escape, Lincoln Corsair, or Lincoln Aviator, there’s a good chance your vehicle is part of one of the most significant auto recalls of 2026. In early March, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced two separate recalls covering roughly 1.74 million Ford and Lincoln vehicles — all tied to software problems that interfere with rearview camera systems.

This isn’t a minor inconvenience. A malfunctioning rearview camera is a genuine safety hazard. Federal law requires backup cameras to function correctly, and when they don’t, drivers are left guessing what’s behind them every time they reverse. Here’s a full breakdown of the recall, which vehicles are affected, and what your legal options may be.

What Is This Recall About?

The two recalls share a common theme — defective software causing rearview cameras to fail — but the technical causes differ between vehicle groups.

Recall One: Overheating APIM Module (Ford Bronco and Ford Edge)

The Bronco and Edge recall stems from a problem with the Accessory Protocol Interface Module, or APIM, a core component that controls the vehicle’s infotainment system, including the touchscreen and backup camera. According to recall documents, the APIM can overheat due to the proximity of HVAC ducts and the audio head unit, with temperatures reaching as high as 105°C (221°F). When the module overheats, it shuts down temporarily, causing the entire touchscreen to go dark, including the rearview camera display.

During that shutdown period, the rearview camera and other touchscreen features can remain unavailable for up to five minutes until the system cools down. Drivers reversing in a parking lot, driveway, or busy street during that window are essentially operating blind.

Recall Two: Inverted or Flipped Camera Image (Explorer, Escape, Lincoln Corsair, Lincoln Aviator)

The second recall affects the Explorer, Escape, Corsair, and Aviator. In these vehicles, a problem with the touch integrated circuit on the display’s printed circuit board can corrupt a register in the display microcontroller, causing the rearview image to flip or invert entirely.

Imagine backing out of a space and seeing the camera image upside down or mirrored. What appears to be on your left is actually on your right. This type of distortion can cause serious miscalculations and increase the risk of a collision.

Both issues make the affected vehicles noncompliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, which governs rear visibility requirements.

Which Vehicles Are Included?

The recall covers approximately 528,168 Ford Broncos from model years 2021 to 2026, and 321,142 Ford Edges from 2021 to 2024, both affected by the APIM overheating issue. The second recall covers around 516,780 Ford Escapes from model years 2020 to 2022, along with 110,696 Lincoln Corsairs from the same years. Ford Explorers and Lincoln Aviators from 2020 through 2024 are also included.

What Is Ford Doing About It?

Ford is working on a software update remedy and will begin sending notification letters to owners of the Bronco and Edge starting March 30, 2026. Owners of the Explorer, Escape, Corsair, and Aviator will be notified in April. Once a fix is available, some vehicles will receive an over-the-air software update, while others will need a dealer visit.

The frustrating reality is that, as of this writing, no fix is yet available. Ford expects remedies to be available for some models by the end of March, while timelines for others remain undetermined. That means affected vehicle owners are currently driving with a known safety defect and no clear resolution date.

What Are Your Legal Rights as an Affected Owner?

A recall alone does not make you whole. Ford may fix the software defect for free, but that doesn’t compensate you for:

  • Diminished resale value caused by a disclosed safety defect
  • Out-of-pocket expenses incurred before the recall was announced
  • Injuries or property damage resulting from a camera failure
  • Time lost arranging dealer appointments and alternate transportation
  • Ongoing safety risks while a fix remains unavailable

Depending on your state, you may have claims under consumer protection laws, lemon law statutes, or negligence theories. Class action lawsuits against automakers for systemic defects are also common and allow large groups of affected owners to pursue compensation together. If you were in an accident caused by a rearview camera failure before or after this recall was announced, your individual damages may be significant enough to warrant a separate personal injury or product liability claim.
