Welltok began notifying companies in September that they may have had their data stolen in the MOVEit ransomware incident that occurred over the summer. Only on December 22, did the company start providing written notice to 847,356 Connecticut residents.
What Happened?
Hackers exploited software vulnerabilities and accessed the MOVEit Transfer server on May 30, 2023. The group exfiltrated certain data from the MOVEit Transfer server, which impacted tens of millions of people and hundreds of companies, including Welltok, a vendor of Yale New Haven Health.
Information that was stolen included names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, treatment information/diagnoses, provider names, patient IDs, health insurance information, and treatment cost information.
The MOVEit data breach affected dozens of companies across the country, including Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Centerwell Pharmacy, Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York, Holzer Health System, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, Humana Inc., Mass General Brigham Health Plan, Priority Health, and Trinity Health.
