Nelnet Servicing, a company operating out of Lincoln, Nebraska, may have experienced a data breach that allegedly exposed the names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and Social Security numbers of up to 2.5 million student loan borrowers.

According to the notification letter sent out by Nelnet Servicing, the breach impacted “certain student loan account registration information.” An unknown party hacked into the systems in June 2022. Nelnet stated that the following private information was subject to unauthorized access:

  • Address
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Social Security number
