The legal cases against Meta rest heavily on internal company documents that have been produced in discovery. Those documents have shown that company engineers and researchers raised repeated concerns about the effect of the platforms on younger users, that internal studies identified correlations between platform use and harm to adolescent girls in particular, and that leadership was aware of these findings and made business decisions that prioritized engagement over the safety of its user base.

In early 2026, a California jury found Meta and YouTube liable on negligent design and failure-to-warn claims in a landmark trial involving a plaintiff identified as K.G.M., who began using social media at age 10. The jury found that the platforms were deliberately built to be addictive and that company executives knew the design was causing harm to young users. The jury awarded compensatory and punitive damages totaling six million dollars, with Meta bearing the majority of responsibility. The verdict is expected to have significant influence on how thousands of additional pending cases are resolved.

Separately, a New Mexico jury awarded three hundred seventy-five million dollars against Meta following a trial involving the state attorney general’s claims that Meta misled the public about the safety of its platforms while internal documents showed the company was aware of serious risks to children, including sexual exploitation.

Past Lawsuits Against TikTok and YouTube

TikTok and YouTube have also been named in significant platform accountability litigation, both as defendants in the federal multidistrict litigation and as targets of independent actions.

TikTok

TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, has faced mounting legal pressure since at least 2022. Early lawsuits focused on TikTok’s role in distributing viral challenges that led to the deaths and injuries of children. In one widely reported case, Anderson v. TikTok, a federal appellate court allowed a wrongful death claim to proceed after TikTok’s recommendation algorithm served a so-called blackout challenge video to a 10-year-old girl who died attempting it. The Third Circuit Court of Appeals held that Section 230 did not shield TikTok’s algorithmic content recommendations from liability, a ruling that significantly expanded the legal theory available to plaintiffs.

By October 2024, a bipartisan coalition of 13 state attorneys general had filed lawsuits against TikTok. These actions alleged that TikTok engineered its platform to maximize compulsive use among minors, used virtual currency mechanics that enabled financial exploitation through insufficient age verification, violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, and misled the public about the risks of the platform. The lawsuits cited TikTok’s infinite scroll, rapid-fire short video format, notification design, and content filters as features deliberately calibrated to overcome users’ ability to disengage.

In the California bellwether trial that produced the landmark 2026 verdict against Meta and YouTube, TikTok settled with the individual plaintiff before trial, allowing the case to proceed against the remaining defendants.

YouTube

Google’s YouTube was found liable alongside Meta in the March 2026 California verdict. YouTube’s liability in that case arose from the same legal theory applied to Meta: that the platform was deliberately designed with features that the company knew were creating compulsive use patterns in younger users, and that the company failed to adequately warn users or implement available safety measures. YouTube’s share of the damages reflected the jury’s finding that it bore approximately thirty percent of responsibility for the plaintiff’s harm.

YouTube has also been named in the broader social media multidistrict litigation alongside Meta, TikTok, and Snapchat, where claims by school districts, individual plaintiffs, and state attorneys general continue to move through federal and state courts.

The Scope of the Current Litigation

The social media platform litigation has reached a scale that draws direct comparison to mass tort actions against Big Tobacco in the 1990s. In that litigation, internal industry documents revealed that tobacco companies knew about the addictive and harmful properties of their products for decades before the public became aware.
