Hormone Therapy Associated with Ovarian Cancer

Currently, there are about 6 million women who use hormonal therapy in the United States and the United Kingdom. The link between hormonal therapy and ovarian cancer has been a topic for years, with little results or largely biased results posted. However, a recent study using 52 different datasets has found a very strong link between hormone therapy and ovarian cancer in women.

To ensure that women in the control group of one study were compared to similar women in that same study, subjects were matched by age, body mass index, parity, age at menopause, and past usage of contraceptives. Year of birth, family history of ovarian or breast cancer, ethnic origin, education, height, alcohol consumption, and smoking did not have a significant effect on the outcomes.

The results were founded upon 21,488 post-menopausal women with ovarian cancer. Risk was increased with less than five years usage. In fact, the risk was greatly higher for women who had simply ever used hormone therapy over women who had never used hormone therapy. However, recency of use did appear to have a positive correlation with the risk of developing the disease.

Moreover, the relative risk was increased the most for serous and endometrioid ovarian cancers and less so for clear-cell ovarian cancer. The cancers differ based on point of origin within the woman’s body.
