Raptiva Withdrawn

On Monday, June 9, 2009, the psoriasis medication RAPTIVA was officially withdrawn from the U.S. market by its manufacturer, Genentech, Inc., stemming from risks that users may develop progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). PML is a rare and usually fatal viral disease that occurs almost exclusively in people with severe immune deficiency. According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, there have been three confirmed and one possible case of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) in people taking Raptiva. Three of those people have died.

The Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati and the Christ Hospital Settle Claims for Violating Anti-Kickback Statute and Defrauding Medicare and Medicaid. Now, HHS is considering cutting Christ Hospital from Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement. "Health care providers should make medical decisions based on the needs of their patients, not on the financial interests of physicians or other providers," said Tony West, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division of the Department of Justice. "We will not allow hospitals to put profits ahead of sound medical decision-making."

FDA Warns of Risk with Unapproved Use of Malaria Drug Qualaquin

The Lyon Firm is investigating cases related to the unapproved use of Qualaquin. Qualaquin is marketed by Philadelphia based AR Scientific. The FDA approved Qualaquin in August 2005 for treatment of uncomplicated malaria caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum, a life threatening infection if left untreated.
