After identifying suspicious online behavior in February 2023, PurFoods launched a data security investigation with the help of a third-party. The investigation concluded that the company experienced a cyberattack that resulted in the encryption of certain sensitive files. According to reports, 1.2 million individuals may have had their data compromised.

What Personal Data Was Impacted?

The data breach notifications released by PurFoods suggest that personal and protected health information related to certain individuals was compromised, including the following:

  • Names
  • Social Security numbers
  • Driver’s license or state identification numbers
  • Financial accounts and/or payment card information
  • Medical information
  • Health information
  • Dates of birth

PurFoods is notifying the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and other authorities in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

PurFoods, LLC is the parent company of Mom’s Meals,  a home meal delivery company headquartered in Ankeny, Iowa. They deliver refrigerated ready-to-eat meals to consumers across the U.S. With a focus on serving seniors and individuals with special dietary needs, the company provides pre-prepared meals that cater to specific dietary requirements, such as low-sodium, diabetic-friendly, renal-friendly, cancer support, and portion-controlled meals.

PurFoods partners with insurance companies, managed care organizations, and federal and state supported programs which is perhaps why such a large range of personal data was collected and stored in their database.
